Twelve checks before you buy employee monitoring software

Employee monitoring software checklist

Most buying mistakes in this category happen before the demo, not during it. Here are twelve checks, in the order the problems appear.

Legal and organisational: can you state the purpose in one sentence; is the notice written before the installation date; is the role of employee representatives confirmed; is there a named person accountable for the data.

Technical: can each module be switched on independently; what happens offline and where does the local cache live; is there a real self-service view for employees; how do uninstall and offboarding work.

Data governance: are access rights granular and is every view logged; is retention enforced by the system or by people remembering; can you export your own records and then leave.

Vendor: will they say no to a feature you asked for. A vendor that explains why a request is disproportionate is worth more than one that ships everything.

If you keep only three: independent modules, granular access with logging, and system-enforced retention. Those three decide whether the rest of your policy can actually be implemented.

Full checklist with the reasoning for each item: twelve checks before you buy.
